Energy infrastructure takes time to build up; new energy technologies take time to develop. Policy shifts often also need many years to take effect. In most world regions the transformation from fossil to renewable energies will require additional investment and higher supply costs over about twenty years

Development of a global energy scenario requires the use of a multiregion model in order to reflect the significant structural differences between energy supply systems. The International Energy Agency’s breakdown of world regions, as used in the ongoing series of World Energy Outlook reports, has been chosen because the IEA also provides the most comprehensive global energy statistics. The list of countries covered by each of the ten world regions in the IEA’s breakdown is shown in Figure 7.Map ‚definition of world regions’
