Russia currently exports 23 TWh/a and imports 10 TWh/a.Compared to the overall electricity generation of 951 TWh/an either the import (1%) nor the export (2.3%) of electricity plays a significant role within the Russian power sector. The Energy[R]evolution scenario maintains a 100% independence of national power generation and increase both import and export to 35TWh/a. Especially for the southern part of Russia imports of electricity from solar thermal power plants from Kazakhstan can bean economic alternative for close to border cities. The potential for solar thermal power plants in south central Asia is enormous and should be exploited.
According to the Energy [R]evolution a capacity of 400 MW couldimport electricity from concentrated solar power stations (CSP)already in 2030. By 2050 around 3000 MW of solar power plantscould operate in Central Asia and import 15 TWh/a to Russia.
